Whale-watching
During the whale season, which is between June to December, the Whale Coast and particularly Walker Bay, presents us with mating, breeding and calving whales.
Whale Season is when people flock to the vibrant town of Hermanus for the famous Whale Festival and for what is said to be the best land-based whale-watching. Whale-watching boat trips also leave Hermanus to give a different perspective on these gentle giants. De Kelders, further along the coast towards Gansbaai, also offers superb whale-watching vantage points on the cliffs above Walker Bay. KLEINMOND also offer great whale watching right off the main beach. In fact, during whale season, whales can be spotted from almost anywhere along the most southern coast of Africa. On the Whale Coast you can enjoy whale-watching from the shore, from a boat and even from the air.
Dyer Island
Dyer Island
8 km off the Whale Coast is Dyer Island and the rocky outcrop of Geyser Rock, both proclaimed
Nearby Geyser Rock is home to a Cape Fur Seal colony of more than 50 000 (pretty smelly) seals.
The two small islands are separated by "Shark Alley", so called because of the many Great White
Sharks who frequent it. A Great White Shark's favourite snack is Cape Fur Seal.
Although you can't land on either protected island, boat trips to Dyer Island will give you the opportunity to see the seals, penguins and other seabirds in their natural habitat ,Dolphins, Great White Sharks and whales in season are also often spotted on these trips.
Shark Cage Diving
Shark Cage Diving
Get up close and personal with the most feared predator of the ocean, the Great White Shark. Provided with a wetsuit and mask you are lowered into a steel cage that protects you as you hold your breath and submerge yourself in shark-infested waters. Under the water you may get to appreciate the beauty and grace of these creatures that are so perfectly adapted to their environment - as well as marvel at the size of their teeth! The most unpleasant part of the excursion is the seasickness many people suffer - to really enjoy great white shark cage diving, we recommend you pack some motion-sickness pills.
